Hike to lava flow 5-20-03

Our guide explains to us that a vigorous break out of lava has just come barreling down the distant hillside and is now at about the 800ft. (250 m) elevation. This new flow is making it's own path through the forest creating amazing contrasts between the fiery red lava and the bright green vegetation.

Lava burning through vegetation creates a very serious threat of methane explosions. It is ill-advised to hike to such an area without the supervision of a guide.  Enter Ian...our guide
